Waiheke fights to keep successful recycling scheme

If you know Waiheke Island off Auckland, then you know the islanders like to do things their way.

And that’s how they’ve been recycling. A community company recycles more than 40 per cent of waste. Much better than Auckland’s 18 per cent.

But Auckland City Council has stepped in and today an Aussie based multi-national was awarded the contract.

Why? Because the council says its cheaper.

But the Waiheke Islanders ask at what cost? Where will the recyclables go and what about the council’s commitment to Community.
